In our small business, I am the IT Department (“Honey, could you come in here and take a look at this? I’ve never had this happen before!”), the designer, the copywriter, the marketing department, and the Administrative Assistant. Back when I was a youngster, the name they gave to tasks that included typing, tidying and keeping files, mailing marketing letters, taking shorthand, etc. was “secretarial,” and with that comes all manner of “Mad Men” notions, with cartoon and TV bosses making passes at shapely young women while their wives are suspicious and unsure of their husband’s fidelity.
Okay, okay, let’s just put it right out there: I sleep with The Quincy Group owner, but he does as well, so we’re square.
I bring this up because April 22nd is Administrative Professionals Day, formerly known as National Secretary Day. But take that with a grain of salt, because the 26th is National Pretzel Day, and the 29th, National Zipper Day, so you don’t need to be all that and a bag of chips to get your own day. (National Potato Chip Day: March 14th.)
I plan on treating myself on Admin Assistants Day. Because I am my own boss, I can do this. I will approve the expenditure and can take extra time off if I want. To start the day, I’m not going to get moving until 10 a.m. – which is not unusual, since we’re living on Pacific COVID time – and I’m going to wear a robe right up to lunchtime – which is not unusual since yadda yadda yadda see above. I’m going to make myself a lovely lunch, perhaps even purchase a lunch to-go from a local restaurant, and I may even indulge in a little glass of beer. I will toast myself and say things like, “I don’t know what I’d do without me!” and “What would happen if I wasn’t here to keep me in line?” and “I am sometimes underappreciated, but this helps me to know how valuable I am to me!” Then I’ll open the box of chocolates that I’ve purchased for me and have one or two pieces. Later in the afternoon, I’ll get flowers from me with a lovely note that says, “You’re great!”
It’s a week away, and I’m already excited! I hope I can still act surprised when I treat myself this way!
Wait a minute. Fred’s calling to me from his office. Something weird going on with his computer ….
